By Jim Kennard What does "Natural" mean, and what does "Synthetic" mean? And exactly what makes synthetically produced fertilizers, if there is such a thing in the first place, any worse for your garden than naturally produced ones? This is one area in which a lot of balony gets thrown around - and regrettably believed by many good people. The simplest and most natural of the commercial fertilizers is probably lime. It's also almost universally recognized as important, and used by every kind of gardener who knows what he's doing and has access to it. The world has an inexhaustible supply of limestone (calcium carbonate), and it's simply ground to powder in powerful rock crushers, bagged, and sold to the public. We even receive much of our magnesium from the same process, when the raw material is dolomitic limestone (labeled as dolomite lime). All twelve of the other nutrients man can control are also mined from the earth. However, we have learned over time how to remove impurities, such as heavy metals, and increase the concentration of
the individual nutrients, by running them through a simple concentration process. This is often just a sulfuric acid bath, which leaves us with a much higher concentration of the original nutrient, plus sulphur, which is itself a very important nutrient. This is one reason most of the nutrients come as a combination with sulfate (zinc sulfate, etc.). So, we benefit by getting a much higher concentration of the nutrient we want, plus sulphur, with no heavy metals, and it costs MUCH less to ship to our locations, because it weighs only a fraction of the original raw material. Are those fertilizers synthetically produced? I don't think so, but perhaps they are by some peoples' definition. Did you know that even nitrogen is mined out of the ground? This may surprise many people, but it actually is - in Chile, South America - where huge mines of sodium nitrate exist. But can you imagine the cost to get it to the USA, though? And what would we do with the sodium salts?? Thank goodness we have found a better, more efficient, and therefore far less costly way to produce nitrogen fertilizers. About 90 years ago two German scientists, Fritz Haber and Karl Bosch, discovered and commercialized the processes by which nitrogen could be separated from other elements in different compounds and
made available as fertilizer. These discoveries arguably served as the single most important component leading to exponential global agricultural growth, and the Haber-Bosch process is still the benchmark process used today. I believe the world owes much of what we have agriculturally today to the use of nitrogen that has been produced by the Haber-Bosch process, and whether or not it's synthetic is, to me at least, irrelevant. I do believe there is a valid and important argument against the uncontrolled "synthetic" production of chemicals having to do with the garden, but I believe it should be limited to pesticides and herbicides. This is a more complex issue that will take more time to discuss, and we won't go there at this time. I do hope that readers of this article are able to understand and appreciate the value and importance of mineral nutrients in helping us grow strong, healthy plants, and that you will not spend your time worrying about "natural" or "synthetic" fertilizers. Tuberous Begonias
By Geoff Bryant
If you appreciate plants that have no hesitation in boldly stating their presence with huge, almost artificially perfect flowers, then tuberous begonias are for you. While some may find them rather too overstated, downright brazen even, if you like colour, and plenty of it, with subtlety an option rather than compulsory, then look no further.
Flowering from late spring, as the days exceed 13 hours long, until well into autumn when the foliage dies back, these tuberous-rooted perennials have been extensively hybridised and refined to the point where the larger-flowered forms are nothing short of spectacular. For those with greenhouses or a very mild winter climate there are even types that flower well into winter, if not right through the cooler months.
Description and classificationand groups
Begonias are among those convenient plants where the proper name is also the common name. The genus is found in the tropics and subtropics, particularly in the Americas, and is made up of around 900 species with 130-odd in cultivation, from which many cultivars and hybrids have been developed. These garden forms have been divided into 8 main categories. They are:
1. Cane-like, which have narrow, upright stems with conspicuous leaf nodes and evergreen foliage. 2. Shrub-like, which are bushy plants with branching stems. 3. Thick-stemmed, which resemble the cane-like but with much heavier stems that sometimes form a trunk. 4. Semperflorens, which are the fibrous rooted types usually treated as summer-flowering bedding annuals. 5. Rhizomatous, which may be evergreen or deciduous and which are often grown as much for their foliage as for their flowers. 6. Rex-cultorum, which are the fancy-leaved Rex begonias that are usually grown as house plants. 7. Tuberous, which have thickened tuberous roots and which usually die back over winter or, in the case of the winter-flowering types, which may be dried off at some other time. 8. Trailing Scandent, which are pendulous, ever-blooming plants often with long internodes and which should not be confused with the trailing tuberous begonias.
So group seven it is, yet although quite a few begonia species have tuberous roots, when we talk of tuberous begonias we're generally referring to the fancy-flowered group of garden-raised plants known as Begonia tuberhybrida. Developed mainly from South American species, they first appeared in Europe in 1867, just three years after the introduction of the most influential of the early parent species, Begonia pearcei. Since that time thousands of hybrids have been raised and we now have tuberous begonias in a wide range of sizes and styles of flower and growth habit.
There are small- medium- and large-flowered hybrids; they may have single, semi-double or fully rose- or camellia-like double flowers; they may be small and mound-forming, trailing or upright to nearly a metre tall. And while the flowers are spectacular, don't ignore the foliage. Because although unlike say the Rex begonias, tuberous begonias are never grown for their foliage alone, their velvety, deep green leaves add a rich luxuriance that is the perfect foil to the flowers, which would definitely be diminished without the contrast of the leaves.
Cultivation
So, tuberous begonias are beautiful. I don't need to tell you that, the pictures speak for themselves, but how do you get the best out of them? Well, as garden plants they're not for everyone and not for every location, though with careful selection and siting you may be surprised at just how well they grow outdoors in many parts of New Zealand.
Begonias have a preference for cool, moist conditions and a climate that doesn't suffer from extremes of summer heat or winter cold. They need bright light to flower well but should be out of direct sunlight, especially during the heat of the day, and they also need shelter from strong winds or the flowers may brown at the edges and the soft foliage may be torn or bent. Tuberous begonias flower best with humus-rich soil, plenty of moisture and regular feeding.
Given those requirements it's not surprising that many gardeners choose to cultivate tuberous begonias indoors, as conservatory, shadehouse or cool greenhouse plants. However, if you have a bright southerly facing position in your garden or a shaded spot facing north, then begonias will thrive outdoors too, particularly in areas that don't often experience drought in summer.
Strong sun and wind, especially hot dry winds, are the main enemies; light soil that dries out quickly doesn't help either. But in a lightly shaded, sheltered position with soil that has been thoroughly prepared with plenty of well-rotted compost tuberous begonias will flower from early summer to the first frosts. And all that you need do is to stake the tall growers to bamboo canes (specialist nurseries stock wire frames), remove any spent flowers, keep the soil moist and add a little liquid fertiliser every week.
If you find that the super-fancy large-flowered forms are simply not tough enough for your garden, don't give up. Instead try some of the smaller-flowered hybrids. The little Multiflora types, commonly known as Flamboyant Begonias, are very resilient. Grown as massed bedding or in clusters, they're most commonly seen with bright red flowers, which often almost hide the foliage, but also occur in orange and a somewhat weaker yellow-flowered form.
Nonstop begonias are crosses between the Multifloras and the larger flowered types. As you'd expect they're of intermediate height and vigour. They flower continuously, even in winter if kept indoors, and are available in a wide range of colours. Nonstops are F1 hybrids so there is no point in saving the seed and any seedpods should be removed to keep the plants flowering. Reiger begonias, developed from Begonia hiemalis, are similar.
And if open beds don't seem to work, consider growing your begonias in pots so that you can find just the right place for them. The upright types flower and grow well but are rather brittle, necessitating staking. The trailing types, often Begonia boliviensis hybrids, have more flexible, pendulous stems and when grown in hanging baskets they are easy-care plants that make a great show. Trailing begonias usually do best in sphagnum-lined wire baskets rather than solid pots, their roots appreciating the cool moist sphagnum.
Disbudding and deadheading
Begonias have separate male and female flowers. Usually one large female flower is subtended by two smaller male flowers. Removing the male flowers before they mature will allow the showy female flowers to reach their full size and will also prevent the development of seedpods that could lessen the plant's vigour. Old flowers should be removed once past their best. They snap off easily and doing this not only encourages new blooms to form, it also helps prevent fungal diseases that could develop among the decaying petals.
Pests and diseases
Begonias are neither particularly susceptible to nor resistant to pests. Slugs and snail relish the young shoots and the mature foliage, various caterpillars may chew the foliage, rasping and sap-sucking creatures such as thrips, aphids and mealy bugs may be present, but with a little attention and routine care, pests can usually be stopped before they get out of control.
More of a problem are fungal diseases, especially soft rots, mildew and botrytis. Damaged stems can quickly become soft, watery and rotten and this may lead to the eventual collapse of the plant. Almost inevitably the foliage will develop mildew in late autumn- it's just part of the winter die-back process- but mildew can also occur during the growing season. Good ventilation goes a long way towards controlling the severity of fungal diseases, keeping the foliage and stems reasonably dry also helps, though spraying with a fungicide will probably be necessary too.
Winter care
As flower production lessens from mid-autumn, cut back on watering and feeding and allow your begonias to dry off. While the foliage should dry, brown and fall away without too many problems, do keep an eye open for any fungal diseases that could spread to the tubers.
Once the foliage has dried, the tubers may be lifted or removed from their pots for winter storage. This isn't always necessary in mild winter areas, but where hard frosts or prolonged wet conditions are likely it's a good idea. The tubers can be stored in barely moist sawdust or any other fairly dry, inert medium, such as damp, shredded newspaper. Replant them (concave side up) in spring as the new shoots appear. Cover the tubers with a few centimetres of soil, as they sprout roots from the tops too.
The exceptions to the process are the winter-flowering Begonia hiemalis hybrids, which result from crossing Begonia tuberhybrida with Begonia socotrana, a species from an Indian Ocean island off the caost of Yemen. Widely sold as Reiger or "blush" begonias, these plants start to flower from late summer and will remain in leaf and flower until spring. Obviously these plants, which are completely intolerant of frost, need a very mild, benign winter to grow outdoors. However, they are very adaptable to indoor cultivation and are a great choice for winter-flowering house plants that can spend the summer outdoors in the garden.
Propagation
There are several ways to propagate tuberous begonias, the method used varying with they type of plant.
Seed
Sow bought seed to produce F1 hybrids such as the Nonstops or to get a new crop of vigorous young plants.
Begonia seed is very fine, dust-like in fact. It's so fine that it doesn't usually come in seed packets, where it would be lost in the folds, but in glass phials that have to be snapped open before sowing. Pelleted seeds are much easier to handle, thought they are not always readily available.
The seed needs warmth and light to germinate. It should be sown in spring, uncovered, in heated trays. Keep the seed just moist until it germinates. The young seedlings grow quickly and are soon large enough to pot. When small they are sensitive to draughts and temperature fluctuations and should be kept under cover until spring is well settled into early summer.
Prepare your garden beds with high-humus compost and organic fertiliser and because the foliage will be tender, plant out when the weather is not too hot and sunny.
Division
Mature plants have large tubers that divide readily and division is a good way to quickly produce established, sturdy plants. Divide the tubers in spring when replanting. They slice easily with a sharp knife but because finding the growing 'eyes' can be difficult keep your divisions on the large side. To prevent fungal diseases, dust the cut surfaces with sulphur powder and allow them to dry before planting.
Cuttings
Most tuberous begonias will grow from cuttings and this is an especially good method of building up large stocks of the small-flowered Multiflora types for massed bedding. The fresh spring and early summer shoots make the best cuttings and will strike very quickly under mild humid conditions. You can continue to take cuttings well into summer but unless the new plants can develop reasonably sized tubers before winter they will probably not survive until the following spring.
Like many of the house plant begonias, Begonia hiemalis is often raised from leaf cuttings. This involves removing a mature leaf, slicing across its veins and pinning the leaf down on moist soil. A warm humid environment, such as an enclosed propagation tray, is essential. Also, you should start in spring so that the young plants are well-established before winter.
Begonia displays
Public gardens often use tuberous begonias in their displays and this can one of the best ways to see a wide range of flower types. Proof That God Exists
By Emmanuel Emezie The existence of God can be proved in two ways by practical demonstration and by deduction. These two methods are employed because they are acceptable to science. In science, fact can be established by practical demonstration and knowledge can be arrived at by deduction. Let us begin with the method of practical demonstration. We are told that the earth has a magnetic field. We cannot see, hear or touch this magnetic field. However, science is able to show proof of its existence in this way. When a bar magnet is suspended so that it can swing freely on a horizontal plane, it will always come to rest with its north pole pointing approximately towards the geographic north. So, although we cannot see, hear or touch the earths magnetic field, science is able to prove its existence by demonstrating its effect on a freely suspended bar magnet. This, therefore, means that a thing that is not observable does in actual fact exist if it produces observable effects on some other thing. God is not observable. We cannot see, hear or touch Him. However, God produces observable effects in the lives of human beings. When we put our faith in Him, we experience the effect of His power. Countless cases and instances abound of people who, when they were in difficulty, put their faith in God and experienced the positive effect of His power. Below is one of the many testimonies and incidents recounted in the book, The Power of Positive Thinking, by Norman Vincent Peale (Worlds Work Ltd, Publishers). (To keep this article from being lengthy, I have chosen this rather brief testimony which can be found on pages 195 and 196). Another efficient woman physician wrote me of her own development in combining the therapy of medicine and faith. I became interested in your straight forward religious philosophy. I had been working at top speed and getting tense, irritable, and at times beset with old fears and guilts, in fact in need of a release from morbid tension. At a low moment early one morning I picked up your book and began to read it. This was the prescription that I needed. Here was God, the great Physician, with faith in Him as an antibiotic to kill the germs of fear and render useless the virus of guilt. I began to practice the good Christian principles outlined in your book. Gradually there came a release of tension and I felt relaxed and happier and I slept well. I quit taking vitamin and pep pills. Then, she adds, and this is what I want to emphasize, I began to feel that I wanted to share this new experience with my patients, those who came to me with neuroses. I was surprised to find how many had read your book and others. The patient and I seemed to have a common ground to work on. It has been an enriching experience. To talk about a faith in God has become a natural and easy thing to do. As a doctor, she adds, I have seen a number of miraculous recoveries due to Divine aid being given. In the past few weeks I have had an additional experience. My sister had to undergo a serious operation about three weeks ago. Following the operation she developed intestinal obstruction. On her fifth day she was very critically ill, and as I left the hospital at noon I realized that she must take a turn for the better very soon or her hope of recovery would be slim. I was very worried, so I drove slowly around for about twenty minutes praying for a relief of this obstruction. (Everything that could be done medically was being taken care of). I had not been home more than ten minutes when the phone rang, and her nurse told me that the obstruction has relieved itself and that she had taken a definite turn for the better, and since that time she has recovered completely. Could I feel otherwise than that Gods intervention had saved her life? So runs the letter of a successful practicing physician. If you will like many more testimonies of peoples experiences of the effect of the power of God in their lives then I recommend that you read this book. On innumerable occasions in my own affairs, I have had to put my faith in God when I came to the limit of my abilities or resources. On every single one of those occasions I achieved the goal I desired or attained the objective I sought. On all those occasions I experienced the effect of the power of God. The fact that God produces observable effects in the lives of human beings is incontrovertible proof that God exists. Let us now employ deduction to again prove that God really exists. For law and order to exist, an authority must be present to establish and maintain it. In the absence of authority, anarchy usually reigns. Recent events in Bagdad, capital of Iraq, will help illustrate my point. When the government of Saddam Hussein collapsed under the onslaught of American and coalition forces, all hell broke loose. Looters spearheaded the chaos that ensued. Violence and disorderly conduct took center stage. Woman dared not step out onto the streets without the company of their men folk. Life and property were clearly insecure and you could see it glaringly demonstrated no authority, no law and order. Now, it is a scientific fact that natural laws exist. These are laws that apply at all times and in all places and which may be regarded as universal laws. Some examples of such laws are: the law of Gravity, Newtons Laws of Motion and the Law of Demand and Supply. We also know from observation and experience that there is order in the universe. The sequence of the seasons never changes. We always go to bed at night rest assured that day will unfailingly follow night. And when it is dawn, we arise knowing that the sun will invariably rise in the east and later set in the west at dusk. Every living thing reproduces its own kind. A corn plant will sprout from a corn seed. A dog will give birth to puppies and a pregnant human will deliver a baby human. Even then, if the white spouse of a white gentleman gives birth to a dark skinned baby, she will most certainly face accusations of unfaithfulness. White parents produce white babies and black parents produce black babies. That is the natural and unchangeable order of things. It is the order which exists in the universe that enables scientists to calculate precisely when and where the next eclipse will occur. The fact that universal law and order exist means that a universal authority exists. God or whatever name you choose to call this Almighty Power is the universal authority responsible for the establishment and maintenance of universal law and order. To accept universal law and order and reject universal authority simply does not make sense. The former cannot be present without the later. I think it is time we all face up to the fact that God, the Universal Authority, exists. It is time to acknowledge His authority over us and to make doing His will our first priority. This is the only way to go if we are to experience the full and joyous life that the Almighty intended for us. Emmanuel Emezie is a philosopher-scientist. A six-year-long scientific inquiry into the spiritual aspect of life led him to the discovery of intriguing and life-improving spiritual knowledge. I Have Sciatic Nerve Pain - Do I Need Surgery?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Robert_Lieberson] Robert Lieberson Sciatica is the name of a type of leg pain and is fairly common. It is usually caused when a bulging or ruptured disc pinches one of the nerves that goes down to the legs. Often injections, epidurals, or nerve blocks are suggested therapies, and are performed using X-ray for visual guidance. The surgeon injects cortisone, a potent anti-inflammatory, around the painful and inflamed nerve to relieve the symptoms. For a ruptured disc (where a piece has broken off), an open, microscopic surgery may be needed. When the disc is bulging or prolapsed but not broken off, research has shown that some percutaneous (needle) procedures may work well. With percutaneous needle surgery, there is no incision and only a local anesthetic is required. The needle is positioned with the help of X-ray. A laser is then used to remove a small portion of the damaged disc through the needle. The procedure typically takes 20 to 45 minutes, and hospitalization is not needed. The laser needle procedure will be successful 75 to 90 percent of the time in good candidates. Surgery can be avoided if the pain is relieved. Common sense dictates that the least invasive, and the least risky treatments, should be tried first. Dr. Lieberson is a board certified neurosurgeon who specializes in spinal medicine and surgery. He trained at the University of Pennsylvania and at Stanford Medical Center. He has published and lectured in the field of spine surgery. Dr. Lieberson has been in private practice in the Bay Area for over 12 years and has offices in Fremont and Pleasanton. Easy Ways to Sort Glass-Painting Mistakes
By Geraldine Jozefiak Making mistakes in craftwork can often seem like a disaster. Sometimes you feel like binning the whole thing and starting again. When you're working with acetate and glass that isn't always practical. I've used the suggestions below to help many learners feel more confident in sorting common mistakes in Glass Painting. What type of mistakes? The common mistakes come in using outline pen, acrylic paste or methylated-based glass paints. Though different materials, they are all sorted with a single product . It will be no surprise to hear that product is methylated spirits. Outline pens used in glass painting are generally designed for use with overhead projectors and are methylated based. That means that the pens, and the paste used for the thicker 3D outlines, can all be removed with clean meths. Mistakes made with methylated-based glass paints can be removed in the same way. Use water for removing mistakes made with water-based paints. Removing pen and outline mistakes
Whether you are using an outline pen, or paste, the process is the same for both. Follow the instructions carefully and you should completely remove the problem ready to start again. What you need to prepare
1. Pour a small amount of clean methylated spirits into a clean individual sized jam jar and replace the lid.
2. Cover your table with newspaper and place a blank sheet of copy paper on top.
3. Place your acetate or glass on the paper.
4. Gather a few clean cotton buds. What you do
1. Dip one end of a clean cotton bud into the clean meths. and replace the lid.
2. Holding the dipped cotton bud end against one end of the 'mistake', gently roll the cotton bud away from you through the mistake.
3. As you do this, the meths-soaked bud will absorb the paste or pen ink.
4. Don't drag the cotton bud or you may make more of a mess.
5. Continue by dipping in a clean end and roll again until the mistake has gone. You may need to do this a few times. What next
1. Don't forget that you'll need to put back the design outline after all this cleaning.
2. Refresh the design outline again using your paste or pen. Practice
When you first do this it can be fiddly but the result is a good as new piece of work. If it helps to restore confidence then it's important to sort out any mistakes as soon as possible. Left uncorrected it's easy for learners to get discouraged and give up. And if they have had earlier "I can't do craft" experiences, this will just feel like another that convinces them. I always show people how to sort out mistakes, and generally, when demonstrating how to do outlines, I make a mistake! They're not to know if I did it on purpose of not - unless I tell them. It makes it all seem as if problems are really not a problem after all. Practice this before your session so that you feel confident and you'll soon have everyone churning out great pieces of work that they are proud off. And if you do have to start again, hey, no big deal. Start by using materials that won't break the bank. Acetate is a brilliant place to start as it's easily obtainable, cheap and easy to use. Geraldine Jozefiak is passionate about crafts and their place in education. Be part of raising standards in teaching and learning by using the best possible craft instructions.

Why Quinine Sulfate is a Treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_Bicknell] Andrew Bicknell Quinine sulfate is a known muscle relaxant that has been used for many years to help relax tense muscles and relieve muscle cramps. It also helps people who are suffering from involuntary muscle contractions. These attributes make it the perfect choice for treating the muscle cramps that affect many sufferers of restless leg syndrome. There are a variety of symptoms that can occur with restless leg syndrome, but leg cramps can be the most annoying and painful. Waking up in the middle of the night with leg cramps is not anyones idea of fun. The pain of leg cramps can range from mild to excruciating and one of the most effective ways to deal with leg cramps is by taking quinine sulfate. While full strength quinine sulfate must be prescribed by a licensed physician there are over the counter medications that have trace amounts quinine sulfate in them. These trace amounts of quinine sulfate are combined with vitamin to produce an over the counter supplement that can be used as a treatment for restless leg syndrome. The vitamin E is used to help promote oxygen flow to the leg muscles which also helps relieve muscle cramps and when combined with the quinine sulfate is quite effective at leg cramp relief and also helping to prevent future occurrences. Another nice thing about using quinine sulfate as a treatment for restless leg syndrome is that it has few side affects. There are other drugs available that help relieve leg cramps but many of them have the side affect of loss of muscle control. While getting relief from muscle cramps is always welcome not being able to get up and move around because of loss of muscle control can be about as annoying as the cramps themselves. Quinine sulfate does not have this side affect and allows people who suffer from restless leg syndrome to retain their mobility and go about their daily lives. If you or someone you know thinks they may suffer from restless leg syndrome it is important to visit your doctor to confirm the diagnosis. If you attempt to treat your symptoms without knowing what it is that is causing it you can end up doing more harm then good. This is particularly important when taking over the counter medications because while they may help relieve the symptoms, the symptoms may be a sign of any number of other conditions that may or may not be related to restless leg syndrome. A correct diagnosis will not only make sure that the treatment you are receiving is proper it will also allow your doctor to counter any adverse side affects you may have taking your medications. If you think you have or currently suffer from restless leg syndrome and the leg cramps that can come with it see your doctor. They can provide a prescription for quinine sulfate and help effectively treat your restless leg syndrome. Looking for Higher Education in Minnesota State? Colleges and Universities Abound
By Afa Ismayilova Minnesota state colleges and universities offer some of the best educational choices in America. Whether you're looking for the comfort of a close-to-home education or the independence of far away, Minnesota offers 105 schools to choose from; there is something for everyone. Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Have More to Offer than Just an Education When searching for Minnesota State colleges and universities, you should also think about a school close to fun activities and inspiring scenery, allowing for that all important "down-time" from your studies. With 66 state parks, many Minnesota state colleges and universities are literally minutes away from incredible camping, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, self-guided trails, and cross-country skiing. Or if the city scene is more your style, there are great nightclubs, shopping, and restaurants in many of the Metro areas of Minnesota state. Colleges and Universities shouldn't be all work and no play. There are many types of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Do you want a big school, a small school, a technical school? Here are so many choices in Minnesota state college and universities - how will you know the right one for you? Let's take a look at some of the options: Large public universities: Be one of many - earn your degree alongside large groups of other students. This type of learning environment is great for outgoing types who work well with little supervision or support and have unlimited time and resources to devote to fully academic schedules. Smaller community colleges: This type of institution can provide a more personalized education but, can be limited by outdated curriculum and facilities. Can be good for those with a flexible timetable, as the limited class offerings may be difficult to fit into tight schedules. Specialized technical schools: Learn solely about the field you want to work in without expanding into the academic arena. Although you can sometimes get to work faster with a certification through a technical school, the lack of the additional academic education may leave you at a disadvantage in the workplace and in life. Private Colleges: Of all the Minnesota state colleges and universities, these schools may offer the broadest choice. Offering family-like campus settings and the smaller class sizes most students want, they also offer career-focused, technologically-intensive curriculum and personalized student support. More importantly, these schools also offer an academic focus, which can set your education apart from one received through a technical school. Minnesota state colleges and universities could be the best place for you to improve your education and your life in more ways than just academically. Great Minnesota schools are a given but, history, beautiful scenery and fun activities are also all important aspects of education in Minnesota state - colleges and universities are just the beginning. Breast Implant Augmentation Surgery: What To Expect
By Polly Summer Many breast implant augmentation surgery patients do not mentally prepare themselves for the pain involved after surgery. The amount of pain experienced by patients varies, and some patients feel very little pain or discomfort. Others, however (like me) experience a lot of pain. It is not possible to predict how much pain any particular individual is likely to feel, so you should discuss this with your surgeon. If you choose to have "under the muscle" surgery, this increases the risks of post-operative pain. Breast implants can sit much higher than expected until they eventually 'settle'. This can be disconcerting as it causes the nipples to actually point downards. Not the effect you want! You can expect the implants to take up to 6 weeks to begin looking 'normal', and perhaps a further 6 weeks to settle properly into the position they were meant to be. Expect the implants to feel hard. Again, like the position of them, this will improve as they settle, and they will soften. Do not expect them to actually ever feel like real breast tissue though. Breast implants are likely to cause some bruising, and the risk of this is higher with an armpit incision. You can also expect some scarring (as with any invasive procedure). Although the scarring will be permament, it should be light enough so it can be easily masked with makeup. To give you an idea of the risks of heavy scarring (sometimes called "hypertrophic scars") this occurs in roughly 10% of crease incisions (under the breast), 5% of areola incisions, and under 1% of armpit (or axillary) incisions. You can, of course, expect your breasts to be lifted as a result of breast implant augmentation surgery. However, do not expect them to stay where they are after surgery. Age, pregnancy, and childbearing will have the same effect on your breasts whether you have had implants or not. If you have any pre-existing stretch marks, you may expect breast implants to actually fill these out and make them less noticeable! Likewise, implants can cause fresh stretch marks if there is not enough breast tissue to comfortably take your new size. You should discuss this with your surgeon and not be tempted to go too big if this is a risk issue for you. Protect Clothing from Common Hazards - Easy Care Advise for a Busy Lifestyle
By Sheryll Fraze When it comes to
clothing care dry cleaning, mothballs and cedar are what
typically comes to mind. But in fact, common damages such
as snags, discoloration, and mildew cannot be prevented by
using these care methods; particularly for delicate fibers like
silk, lace and beads. Whether storing clothing and accessories at home or packing for a trip, these simple ideas can safeguard them for years to come. 1) Use fabric bags for storage vs plastic Some plastic
and vinyl bags emit PVC gases that over time that can
discolor and weaken delicate fibers. Their poor breathability
can also encourage the development of moldiness and
mildew. Fabric bags are breathable, which keeps garments
fresher and fabrics safer. 2) Create wardrobe zones Even if space is tight,
designate an area inside closets and drawers to keep
valued items away from high traffic areas that are used
every day. Its an easy way to organize and protect delicate
fabrics from snags and pulls. 3) Keep tissue paper handy Whether storing items at
home or inside luggage, folding them in a sheet of tissue
provides a little extra protection from inadvertent snags on
rough surfaces or other items. For long term storage
acid-free paper and breathable storage containers are
recommended. 4) Air out worn garments out before storing them This
helps reduce the attraction of insects that are drawn to
odors from food, perspiration and perfumes. Closets will
also benefit by not having stale odors affect other attire. 5) Check delicate garments after wearing them Take a
few minutes to check for loose beads and use a small pin
to tie off the ends. Some snagged items can be handled at
home with a needle or repair kits. If unsure, taking it to a
professional tailor is recommended 6) Be careful with mothballs and cedar If items are stored
in a cedar chest, be careful that garments do not come in
contact with the oils which can cause burning
discoloration. Also, mothballs and cedar may repel insects -
but if garments are not cleaned before storage, larvae that
have been deposited can still cause damage. These are just a few ideas to help protect fine apparel from
common hazards such as snags, mold and discoloration
and keep them looking great for years. Sheryll Fraze is a designer of wardrobe organizers and

Beautiful Skin 101
By John Russell Most women shy away from being called 'too sensitive.' But when the subject is kin, they're all too willing to wear the scarlet S. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, at least 40% of women believe they have sensitive skin, although most dermatologists report that only a fraction really do. Sensitivity "defined as skin that's prone to irritation from products, weather, or stress" is a real (albeit misunderstood) condition. It's not the same as an allergy. It means you have a lower tolerance for irritating ingredients, such as fragrances and dyes. The evil twist here is that the more skin reacts, the more sensitive it becomes. Imagine normal skin having a natural barrier like Saran Wrap. People with sensitive skin have a disrupted barrier all the time. But by identifying what disrupts that barrier and protecting it with the right moisturizer, you can develop a thicker skin. Read Labels: Before applying creams, lotions, or makeup, read the ingredients list. The fewer ingredients on the label, the better. All products and formulas should be free of fragrance, dye, and isopropyl alcohol (commonly known as rubbing alcohol). And beware of botanical ingredients and oils. Test each new product on the side of your neck for a few days before using it on your face. Cleanse: Wash you face with a milky, non-foaming liquid cleanser or a soap-free bar. Do not use a washcloth or any rough scrubber, which can be too abrasive for sensitive skin. Rinse face well by splashing with lukewarm water and pat with a soft towel, leaving skin slightly damp. There is no need to use a toner, which generally contains drying and irritating isopropyl alcohol. Moisturize: Dab moisturizer onto damp skin in the morning and night. Look for one that contains ceramides, fatty acids, or cholesterol, all of which help form a protective barrier against irritation. In the morning, when the moisturizer is absorbed, apply a sunscreen (with an SPF 15 or higher). It should also contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are least likely to cause reactions.
Cheat Sheet Choose the right products. 'Allergy-tested' means it doesn't have ingredients that cause common reactions. 'Noncomedogenic' means it won't clog pores. Read labels. Not everyone with sensitive skin is troubled by the same thing, but the most common irritants, in order, include fragrance, isopropyl alcohol, dyes, PABA, lanolin, sorbic acid, formaldehyde, and benzoic acid.
Don't assume that natural products are safe. Some botanicals (rosemary, sandalwood, arnica) and essential oils (jojoba, tea tree, lavender) may irritate. Test samples on the neck for several days. If they don't irritate you, they'll probably be fine for your face.
Don't try an arsenal of new products at once. Similarly, if skin breaks out, stop using everything, and reintroduce products one by one. Be as gentle as possible. Use a creamy, liquid cleanser or a soap-free bar and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid Buf-Pufs and washcloths. Pat with a towel and leave skin slightly damp. Moisturize with a product for sensitive skin, or one that contains fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides.
Every day, be sure to apply a PABA-free sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Daily Basics Wash with a milky, non-foaming liquid.
Use a soap-free formula with oatmeal that calms dry and itchy skin.
For day, use a fragrance-free moisturizer containing a non-irritating sunscreen. At night, smooth on a noncomedogenic formula that helps fortify the skin's barrier while you sleep.
Dermatologists say that sensitive-skin sufferers are more likely to avoid using sunscreens, associating them with past reactions to PABA. Choose one that won't aggravate skin.
It's not just what you put on your face. Hair spray can cause breakouts along the hairline. Use an allergy-tested and keep the hair off the face whenever possible. Extra Help To soothe redness, dermatologists recommend using a fragrance-free treatment. A dime-size dab of an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream also relieves itching.
For dryness on the body, increase resistance to the environment with a product containing lipids, which is safe for sensitive types.
To treat blemishes, start with an irritant-free face lotion that minimizes blotches with vitamin A. Follow with a concealer that won't aggravate acne, which does double duty by helping clear and conceal blemishes.
Dermatologists like products that get their color from iron oxides, which are less likely to cause reactions. They're also talc-free, which means they won't rob skin of the moisture it needs. Tricks of the Trade Don't' shower or bathe for more than 20 minutes, or you'll dry out your skin. Use lukewarm water.
Don't start any aggressive treatments during the winter, when skin is dryer and more sensitive because of low humidity and indoor heating. A humidifier helps skin from becoming parched.
Grainy or chemical exfoliants can cause breakouts. Excessive daily scrubbing rubs the sebaceous glands, which can clog pores. Use a clay or mud mask to slough off dead cells instead.
Facials are trouble unless they're simple, steam-free, and employ fragrance-free products.
Avoid chemical peels and laser treatments if you're sensitive to exfoliants and skin-lightening creams.
If acne medications irritate your skin, ask your doctor about taking oral antibiotics or birth-control pills, which can help minimize blemishes.
Keep Retin-A treatments to only once a week. Dilute the strength by mixing it with your moisturizer.
For skin that seems provoked by anything and everything, ask you dermatologist about cleansers and moisturizers that are normally prescribed for hypersensitive postsurgery and postpeel patients.

Best Celebrity Hairstyles for Your Face - Part 3 of 6
By Perriann Rodriguez What are your lifestyle and hair habits? You may look fantastic after you leave the salon wearing a new trendy celebrity hair style. But will you look fantastic after you have washed and styled your hair? The excitement of getting a new hair style sometimes overpowers us into an unreal reality. We imagine how we will look sporting the new layered hair style. How we will wear a certain outfit, with our hair perfectly styled in the new look. When reality hitsusually after the first shampoo---we are generally disillusioned with our hair style. If you face reality before you have any scissors go near your hair, then you may be happier in the long run. Many lifestyle considerations must be evaluated with each type of celebrity hair style you may want. Are you extremely active or inactive? If you are constantly swimming, exercising, riding a motorcycle, you will require extra styling time and work to keep your celebrity hair styles looking good. What aspect of your hair would you like to enhance? (i.e. texture, volume, wave, length, color) These aspects have an important role in fine-tuning the hair style that best suits you.)How much time do you spend styling your hair every day? If you get a hair style that requires more styling time, will you be able (and willing) to put in the time? Are you good at dealing with your hair, or do you struggle with getting it to do certain things? If you struggle with your hair, you would not want to pick a high maintenance hair, i.e. lots of layering, curls as they will require extra work. Are you more comfortable with long or short styles? Sometimes we see a fantastic celebrity short hair style and desperately want the look. Remember that once you cut the hair off, it will take a long time to grow back. Of course there are hair extensions! How often do you shampoo/condition your hair? Referring to hair extensions above, if you want long, beautiful hair with hair extensions, be aware of the extra time needed to shampoo/condition your hair. And every time you shampoo/condition your hair, you will be re-styling it.Is your hair extremely dry or oily? Very dry hair may not hold up to constant flat ironing, curling irons, etc. If you need these appliances to create your celebrity hair style, be sure to deep-condition your hair regularly to combat the dryness. Extremely oily hair may not hold a curl, and will definitely cause issues with many hair extension methods. Be realistic about what you can do with your hair. Are you experiencing any type of unnatural hair loss? Hair loss can be camouflaged by your hair style. Dont pick a hair style that will accentuate your hair loss or thinning. Be sure to look into various hair loss treatments. If caught early, many hair loss situations can be reversed or at least halted.Do you have any cowlicks or a natural and persistent part? No matter what hair style you get, you will need to consider these issues. Adapt the hair style you are looking for to accommodate any imperfections in your hair. You have picked a celebrity hair style that you want. Do you know what the styling requirements are to get your hair to look like that every day?In short, you should consider these 10 lifestyle and hair habits factors before getting a celebrity hair style. Be realistic in what you can do with your hair. Stay tuned for Best Celebrity Hair Styles for Your Face- Part 4 Searching for the hair styles you like. Why Does He Hurt Me?
By Elane Williams I had asked myself these questions so many times. I thought it was my fault. I thought if only I didn't make him so mad. If I just kept my mouth shut he wouldn't hit me. Why couldn't I just keep my opinions to myself? I can't believe that I was stupid enough to let him hurt me and not do anything about it. I had watched so many of my friends live this way and even protected them from their abusers but I couldn't do it for myself. We had a whirlwind relationship; we both had just come out of other relationships and were hurting emotionally. I know now my self-esteem was at the lowest point it had ever been and it has been pretty low sometimes. I have since found out you attract what you are. I guess I was attracting pain and hurt. We went out for lunch and dinner, we watched movies and hung out with his friends. We were inseparable. I pushed everything and everyone else out of my life. I had let him become my whole world. I couldn't see I was doing the same thing I had warned my friends not to do when they got into relationships. Things started to change and he started to get mad at me for silly things. I should have seen the signs. I was so insecure and alone that I just wanted somebody who would love me. The first time he hurt me he had been angry in traffic. He tried to throw me out of a moving car. I stayed with him though and we moved in together three months later. He threw our table and chairs down the stairs the day we moved in together, I should left then but I stayed. I thought it was the stress of moving. After a couple of months of living together things started to get better. We started going out with friends and I thought he had changed. We had been together six months and he asked me to marry him on New Years Eve, I said yes. I was sure it was love. I know now I was scared of being alone if I said no. It wasn't long before I would regret making that decision. It took some time before I was well enough to get out of that abusive relationship. I had to see that I was a worthwhile person and that nobody deserves to be abused. I had to hurt just long enough to want to change myself and my life. Today I can look back on it and realize that I have learned a lot for what I went through. I am a stronger person for surviving the experience. It has made me believe in my inner voice and now I listen to its warnings where before I wouldn't. I am free now to love and be love and not be a hostage of my insecurities. Empowerment and Self-Control - What it Really Takes to get Control of your Weight
By JLee Davis Chant the following each day, several times.
They are mantras that will save your life - - The choice to do nothing is still a choice and yields nothing. - I am responsible for my body. If I dont take responsibility, who will? - I make choices daily as to how I'm going to fuel my body. - I will STAY aware - Choice IS control Control is what you gain once you realize that no one will take care of you. You might think its ok to live with our grown children when we are infirm, but we both know, you and I, that this isn't the case. We would regret imposing on them, at the prime of their lives. We would resent being infirm and therefore feel sorry for ourselves. There is no guarantee against illness, but you and I also know that the eating patterns that brought you to this place are going to make you very ill eventually, if you don't change them starting now. You are in the process of growing toward self-healing. And what a wondrous process that is! You must decide to do that yourself. It sounds like a negative realization. On the contrary, it will be one of the most freeing moments of wisdom you will ever feel. BECAUSE once you realize that your health is up to you and you alone, you are free to move toward healing. Control gives us the freedom to write our own destiny and dreams. That which we desire, control gives us a shot at. We want to be healthy and only WE ourselves can achieve that goal. No one can take that step to make us healthier. So by developing control functions, we better equip ourselves for the task of whipping our poor bodies into shape. How many times have you shaken your fist at the heavens, bemoaning your lack of willpower? Well, you dont have to do that any longer. Were going to toss the word willpower right out on its ear. Take a moment and examine the word willpower. Its meaning is clear. It is the power of your will. Many people have a problem narrowing down the word will. Will can mean many things, but when it all boils down, it is desire, wish, choice and determination. Your will is quite simply...CHOICE. You dont NEED willpower to lose weight. What you NEED is to make a choice. Once you've done that, simply bow to the incredible wisdom of that choice. ---------------------------------------------- About the author JLee Davis has been writing since high school. Through marriage and kids, ill-health and regaining it, she's kept on writing. After over thirty years, she's finding that the best things in life really are there for the taking. Sharing her motivation is one way she has of "paying it forward".

Are You Fully Present in Your Marriage?
By Nancy Wasson "Presence is more than just being there," states Malcolm S.Forbes. How true! Have you ever been talking with someone and felt that they were miles away even though they were sitting next to you? They might have appeared to be listening, but you could sense that they werent really mentally and emotionally present in the conversation. We all have moments when our mind wanders and we lose focus, but if this happens frequently, our relationships with others will be negatively affected. In a marriage, intimacy is enhanced by feelings of connection and harmed when partners start feeling disconnected. When a spouse is physically present but mentally out to lunch, the partner will feel the difference. Something important is missing, and what is missing is the spouses full attention to the conversation or activity. Often, the distracted spouse is feeling rushed, bored, impatient, or stressed. When that happens, the natural tendency is to constantly mentally leap ahead to the next items on the to do list. If this describes you, then you are missing the experience you are having right now because you are so focused on what youre gong to do next. By living in the future, you miss the present. Besides robbing yourself of the enjoyment of the current experience, you are also negatively impacting how others feel when they are around you. Ill make it up to him (or her) later, you may tell yourself as you rush through yet another conversation without really looking at your spouse closely or hearing whats really being said. In the mean time, the feeling of disconnection between the two of you grows and intensifies. One of the ways you can show respect and caring for your spouse is to give the gift of undivided attention. Likewise, you show respect and caring for yourself when you value connecting deeply with others, and that can only be accomplished in the Now. One of the best presents you can give others and yourself is to practice being fully present in your life. It takes practice and discipline to pull yourself back to the present moment when your mind jumps ahead into the future. Breaking any long-standing habit is difficult and can take weeks, even months, of practice. But the pay-off for learning to live more of your life consciously and with more awareness of the present moment is significant. Until you can learn to listen intently and focus your total attention on the other person, you are not connecting at the deepest, most intimate level. As Mary Catherwood observes, Two may talk together under the same roof for many years, yet never really meet. This is the tragedy that befalls many marriages. Follow these five tips to be more present when you interact with your spouse: 1. Stop what you are doing and look at your partner when he/she is talking to you. This shows respect and will make it easier to keep focused. 2. When your mind wanders, gently re-direct it back to the present moment. Take a deep breath to help you stay anchored and centered. 3. Ignore stray thoughts that flit across your mind, trying to distract you. If you dont give them attention, they wont hook you. 4. If you are too distracted to concentrate, tell your spouse, Its really important to me to focus on what youre saying, and I cant seem to concentrate right now. Could we schedule a time to talk later today? 5. Keep the bigger picture in mind. You are investing time and energy into creating satisfying intimacy with your spouse. Each interaction either adds a deposit to the intimacy piggy bank or makes a withdrawal from it. Nancy J. Wasson, Ph.D., is co-author of Keep Your Marriage: What to Do When Your Spouse Says "I don't love you anymore!" This is available as an e-book at http://www.KeepYourMarriage.com ,where you can also sign up for the free Keep Your Marriage Internet Magazine. Nancy can be contacted at Nancy@KeepYourMarriage.com. Re-Gifting
By Marilyn Mackenzie Re-gifting or the giving of a gift that you received to someone else is a topic that has been discussed on talk shows. It has been examined from the standpoint of whether or not its socially correct or part of good etiquette to recycle gifts that one is given. Personally, I do not wish to rehash those same arguments about whether re-gifting is a good or bad thing. Rather, I would like to offer a few pointers for those who propose to recycle gifts. We all know this practice does exist and will probably continue to exist. 1) Make sure you have unwrapped and thrown away the wrapping paper or decorative bag in which you received the gift in question. 2) Make sure you have thoroughly examined said gift for cracks or breaks or flaws. You certainly do not want to give a gift that is broken. 3) Attach a small sticky note to the gift with the name of the person who gave the gift to you, the date, the occasion, etc. You certainly never want to give a gift back to the person who first gave it to you! Also make sure you remove this sticky note before wrapping and giving the gift. You probably dont want the gifts recipient to know that you have recycled the gift. 4) Keep a place in your home (a closet, perhaps?) for gifts that you will recycle. 5) When you need a gift for someone, check your special re-gifting stash to see if there is something appropriate for the person for whom you need a gift. Do take the persons likes and dislikes into consideration. If your friend has allergies to strong smells, you would not want to be recycling a gift of perfume. If your friend only reads non-fiction books, you would not want to give her a fiction romance novel. If your family member never works with his hands, the gift of a few tools might not be the best choice. Remember, you dont want this gift to be recycled again and again, just because you have not done your research on what gift is best for your friend or family member. 6) Since you are saving money by not having to buy a gift, do make sure that your gift is attractively wrapped. Spend some money on good wrapping paper and bows! In todays world, we all need to think of ways to save money. The right methods of re-gifting can be one way of saving money. Just keep in mind that being frugal is not a bad thing, but being cheap is not so attractive. There really is a world of difference. Marketing Breakthrough Method
By Kenneth Little Your Marketing Breakthrough Method is ready for you to use. All you have to do is learn from the experience of one of the best marketers - online and offline. Seth Godin has written a unique book called "Ideavirus". He is a critic of Interruption Marketing (the traditional method) and a Champion of Permission Marketing (asking for the customers permission before presenting them with products). His idea was to make "Ideavirus" available as a free ebook which contained links where the reader could promote it to others. To develop a vast market in the quickest possible time Seth decide to give away his new ebook. In a short time he gave away more than 1,000,000 copies. He explained the secret to his breakthrough marketing method to critics who were quite sure he had gone mad. He believed, because of the quality of his ebook, that as well as downloading the free edition readers would purchase copies of the hard copy when it was released through Amazon. They would do this as they were so impressed with the content they purchased the hard copy and gave it to friends as a gift. Time has proved him right - big time. Sales of the hard copy have reached record levels. You can benefit greatly from this creative approach to marketing whenever you have a new book with a great message. Remember you can't copy his text - that's a breach of copyright and morally wrong, however you can copy his concept. Even as an unknown author - develop a great book, give it away and, encourage others to give it to as many friends as possible. You can make this your Marketing Breakthrough Method. 50 Things To Do To Your Boss That Are Fun For You, But Not For Them
By Dawnell Harrison 1. Youre eavesdropping and you hear your boss has reservations at his favorite restaurant. You know, the one you cant afford. Call them back and cancel his reservations say youre his wife. 2. Have a friend of yours make an anonymous call to your boss saying that they know what he has been up to, possess incriminating pictures, and hang up. It will scare the bejesus out of him. 3. Put chocolate ex-lax in your managers chocolate licorice. Not only will you feel better, it may wipe that constipated look off of his face too. 4. Call the local Mormon or Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church and ask that they visit your house soon, only give them your managers home address. 5. Every time your boss asks you a question, just look at him and say interesting and go back to what you were working on. 6. Take your eyeliner and smears it in his chair when hes not looking. His wife will feel needed when she has to heartily scrub and wash his pants. 7. Turn the pictures on his desk upside down and act overly sweet and innocent when he asks if you know why they are like that. 8. When your boss goes to the bathroom, turn his computer off. When he asks you if you know what happened, say that you dont and it must have just crashed or something. Smile like the Cheshire cat. 9. Enlist a friend to deliver papers appearing to be legal documents that insinuate he is being sued for 4 million dollars. Put word joke on the last page of the 20-page document. It will be fun to watch beads of sweat form on his brow. 10. Remove all toilet paper from the mens bathroom and put it in the womens. Shake your head in disapproval of the janitorial help in your office when your boss complains about it. 11. Put your boss on all of the mailing lists of his most detested organizations and clubs. When he asks you to call and have them remove him from the lists, say of course, and never do it. 12. Replace the vodka in the liquor cabinet with water. Youre doing him a favor, really you are. When he comments that his vodka tastes like water, respond smartly by saying that it appears that just about everyone is cutting corners these days. 13. When he comments that the coffee is too weak or too strong, ask, in a serious tone, if he is sure that his taste buds havent changed. 14. When your boss mentions a particular food that he does not like, purchase that item repeatedly and eat it in front of him. Put your garbage from that food into his garbage can, so that the smell will linger in his office. 15. When you arrive late, move all clocks back. When you want to leave early, move all clocks forward. Pretend that all the batteries need to be replaced. 16. When your boss inquires about your weekend, say you went sky diving and to Italy. He will hopefully get your sarcasm and not ask again. 17. When your manager inquires as to what your favorite TV show is, reply that it is a childs show like Sesame Street. Say it like you mean it. 18. Out of the blue, say you have an emergency appointment with your astrologer and it is important that you leave now because your charts are waiting! 19. For your managers birthday, hire a palm reader to read your managers palm. Pay them an extra $50 to say Oh My in the middle of the reading and not be able to continue. 20. Grind up leaves from your backyard that look like pot, put into a baggie, and send it to your boss. Stand there while he opens it and gasp when the contents are revealed. Say it is none of my business and walk out of the room. 21. Call the fire department and pretend you are in the office next door to yours and exclaim there is a massive inferno in the building next to yours. It is guaranteed to raise your managers blood pressure a few points or more when the firemen arrive. 22. Time your manager when he goes out to run personal errands and comment that he took an exceptionally long break when he returns. 23. Run into the office exclaiming to your manager that his car has a huge dent in the side! Walk outside with him when he goes out to examine it. After he looks it over thoroughly and asks you what you saw because he cant see it, apologize that it must have just been the way the light was reflecting on it that made it appear that way. 24. Exclaim how sorry you are that your managers grandmother died over the weekend and that you read about it in the obituaries. Declare that it must have been somebody with the same name when he says he has no idea what you are talking about and begins frantically dialing his grandmother. 25. Superglue two middle pages of your managers favorite book and return to the shelf. He will find it after the glue has permanently set. 26. When you are simply not in the mood to get out of your chair, proclaim that the copier is broken when your boss asks for copies to be made. If your manager attempts to make copies on his own and exclaims it works just fine, jam a paper clip in the innards of the copy machine when nobody is looking. 27. When your boss asks you what you would like for secretaries day, first of all, reply that you are not a secretary. Request that he answers the phone on that day as well as having all of your whims fulfilled that are of inconceivable proportions. 28. Using desktop publishing, relabel a can of bug spray as vanilla air freshener and place in mens bathroom. 29. Call in sick and leave a message on the companys voice mail. State that you are ill due to the overwhelming imbalance of wealth and power within the companys structure and your illness should subside once you are paid what you are worth. 30. When your boss asks for a donation to his sons little league fund, ask what the minimum amount is that you can donate in order to keep your job. 31. When your boss invites you to the company Christmas party, matter-of-factly state that youd prefer to spend it with rabid dogs and wild monkeys, but proclaim your sincere thanks just the same. 32. Stockpile in your office your managers favorite type of pen so that he is constantly bewildered as to where they are disappearing and continues to order new boxes of pens repeatedly. 33. During your yearly review, exclaim that you would just like to discuss your raise and not your managers suggestions or comments. Also, add that you do have a list of improvements for him that youd like to share. 34. Find bosss buttons and push them. If it is his weight, ask if he has gained weight or do those clothes just make him look fat? 35. Announce at the next company birthday (cake eating in the lunchroom) that the boss is giving everyone a 10% raise. When your manager pulls you into his office to discuss this, say that he sure is losing his sense of humor in his old age. 36. Stack all incoming unwanted sales related faxes and printed e-mails on your managers desk and connect all sales related calls to him, especially the stock brokers. When your manager comments that he would like you to screen all sales related material and calls, comment that you thought he was open to new ideas and new people and didnt realize he was so introverted. 37. After next company announcement of a marriage or pregnancy, proclaim that you are getting married and having a child, but not necessarily in that order. 38. When company phone bill gets passed around asking you to highlight your personal calls, always state that you would never do that and never highlight anything. Say your family and friends all reside in Tasmania. 39. As soon as your boss returns from a vacation, ask where he went and always state that you vacationed there a few years ago and how fantastic it was. 40. Five minutes into the weekly company meeting, excuse yourself to go to the restroom and return twenty minutes later when it is wrapping up. 41. When the boss is out of town, forward the phones to your house and take a nap. Run back to the office if something needs to be done. 42. Position a cup of coffee on your managers desk so that when he sits down, you can pretend to fumble for papers on his desk and easily knock it onto his lap. State that you hope it isnt hot and that no third degree burns are inflicted. 43. If you are single, place your grandmothers antique diamond ring on your married finger on the left hand. When boss asks you if anything new has happened to you recently after he clearly notices your ring, state nonchalantly no, not really. If you are married, remove your wedding ring and state the same answer when asked the same question. 44. On casual dress day, wear a bathing suit top and the shortest shorts that you own. When you are called into your bosss office to discuss this, ask for a list that defines the parameters of the casual dress day code. 45. Circulate an anonymous memo that this coming Friday is fetish day so dress appropriately. Add that a $100 prize will be awarded to the freakiest costume. 46. After your boss gives you an overwhelmingly long list of items for you to complete, ask if hed like for you to wipe his ass as well. 47. Take items out of your managers sack lunch. When he comments on this phenomenon, reply that society is degenerating at an unbelievable rate. 48. When you manager asks you how your day is going, be honest. Say, well, if people that worked for this company werent so dysfunctional and psychotic, it might be a marginally average place of employment. 49. When your boss says good morning, quickly reply, Oh is it? 50. Once a week, send an anonymous email to your boss that is spiteful in nature. To kick it off, the first one should simply read, you are pond scum. Dates in the Spring: More or Less?
By Bernadette Sukley Trust scientists to stick their noses into our private business and private parts. Theyve even torn apart love and boiled it down to its basic chemical components (can you say pheromones?). Heres the truth behind the lore of spring love. Due to the northern hemisphere winter there's a pattern of light and dark that our bodies cannot ignore. Melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleepiness and hibernation is naturally elevated during winter. Come spring, the hormone's levels fall with exposure to longer hours of daylight. The levels of the hormone, serotonin, responsible for feeling good rise. Since melatonin suppresses libido, once it falls theres a renewed interest in sex. Thus an aura of happiness is in the air. Naturally all the male animals check out the female animals coming out of hibernation. Spring is also the time that marks the beginning of a new life cycle; trees and plants blossom. Baby animals; fawns, lambs and the ever so popular rabbits make their appearance. This abundance of life increases interest in fertility. The Oh-my-gosh-summer-is-almost-here! syndrome. An increase in sunlight also means most women realize that they will be revealing portions of their bodies that were kept under cover for about 3 months. Theyve naturally added a few pounds over winter. Why? Because they were lazy and ate too much? Hardly. Again, hormones are to blame. Metabolism slows down caloric burn, so even the most careful of eaters will note theres some extra padding. With the warmer weather these ladies will frantically take to the outdoors to lose weight. An opportunity to test the waters of love also occurs as a preliminary warm up to summer love. Lastly, weather is a huge factor for spring and love. Spring marks the beginning of more sunlight and warmer temperatures. Since the body performs best at temperatures above 55F, all functions go into ready mode. That includes gathering, hunting, catching and er, sex. When temperatures rise in the summer the human body goes into a hot hibernation and bodily functions slow down. Youll note that for most resorts and vacation spots Spring is the beginning of their busy season. More time to play means, more time to date. Bringing Clients in the Door: How Professionals Can Encourage Business
By Sharon Drew Morgen Youre a professional either a doctor, or a dentist, or an artist. Maybe youre an independent sales person who works on commission, or a speaker who must sell yourself. You might even be a B-C business whose product depends on a product or service youve developed. Youve been trained well; you went to a professional school, or positioned yourself as an expert, and youre very good at what you do. And now youve gone into business to give others the opportunity to pay you to do what you do best. You rent space, hire staff, take out a loan possibly a very large loan to populate your office with the best: technology, staff, ambiance. And a few of your friends come in as your first clients. And then you wait for others to walk in the door. And you wait. Youre not a business person and youve not been taught the fine art of marketing. Not to mention that its embarrassing to have to tell others how good you are and that they should pay you because youre good. Hi. Im Joe Smith. Im the new doc in town. You oughta come in and see me. Im really good and Ill take good care of you. When can I expect you? Ive got time to see you, um, all day today, and, um, well, whenever you want to come in I could make time for you. When are you coming in? WHY CONVENTIONAL SALES DOESNT WORK IN THE PROFESSIONAL MARKET Part of the problem is that sales has been based on some rendition of a push strategy, or the newly coined approach of a relationship (which does nothing more than try to have the prospect like you), and of course all of your competitors are doing the same thing. But the model as we've known it is inefficient. Statistically, the very model brings in no more than 7% of its target (obviously leaving a 93% failure rate). Following the conventional sales model, youd have to sell your services by influencing/convincing/persuading folks that you are better than your competitors, that you are to be trusted, that you are price competitive, and that the buyer needs you and your product. And, whatever else they based their decision on. Indeed, that is the problem: who knows what buyers base their decisions on? They do. Only the client knows the criteria to fix or change something. Its been a fallacy, all these years, to believe that because the vendor (you, in this case) can understand the problem (and you do! You do!), and your product can solve their problem (you can! You can!), that your product is a natural fit and that of course you are the best vendor. But only those who live inside the problem have the capacity to understand the problem and resolve it. While a solution may look obvious to you as an outsider, it isnt obvious at all to them. Theyve had the problematic issues, along with a certain set of givens and expectations and work-arounds, in place for a long time; it feels normal to them. And until/unless they are willing and able to do something different, they wont change. At the end of the day, you will never fully understand the clients criteria, or system, or viewpoint, or set of systems that hold the problem in place; and you cant know their criteria for making a change or for using you over their current provider (and everyone has some sort of provider). When I moved here to Austin, I obviously had to change my long term dental providers. After working with a new periodontist for a while, he suggested a regular dentist for a cap I needed. Of course I went on his recommendation. But as I sat in the chair with a numb mouth filled with dental paraphernalia, this guy began telling me about his political convictions which were very, very opposite to mine, and frankly, offensive to me. Next. Was his care good? Probably. Was he a nice guy? Um well, maybe. But Im a highly political animal and couldnt abide by political opinions being spouted at me when I was helpless to object. He had no idea what my criteria were. In fact, he was actually surprised when he called me months later to get my ongoing business and I told him no. Its not about the product. Its not about how wonderful you are. Its about the internal systems the beliefs, the tangle of relationships and policies and historic remedies and people issues and and and. HOW DO WE FIND THE RIGHT CLIENTS? Given you know your craft but may not have the same level of savvy to garner all of the patients or clients that you deserve, how indeed do you get the business to come in the door? Remember: its not about you. Remember that its about how the client makes their best decision. Your job is to help your clients decide to work with you. Here are some ideas that might help. Pick the right ones for you: send out a monthly newsletter with an article of interest. Make sure you mention a new product or service that you have somewhere in the newsletter, but ensure there are articles of interest written by you and other colleagues. This makes you an authority and keeps you top of mind for when your client/prospect can make a new decision. Of course, the article itself might help people decide to come in. contact colleagues in adjacent industries (like periodontists if youre a dentist) and arrange some form of referencing model so you both help each other get business. Getting a referral from a current provider is a great help in the decision process. hold monthly lunch sessions that teach aspects of your business to prospects/clients. Either do it yourself or invite some of your business partners (see #2) to speak some of the time. That will bring in their clients to meet you, help them highlight their skills so they can get new business also, and will offer your current clients new data. write interesting articles in local magazines. This will get you natural press. write interesting articles in e-zines that your client base might read or that will get you local notice. hire someone to call your current clients to find out how you are doing; have them tell you what you can do better, what theyd like to see that they currently dont get from you, and mention youd like a referral if they would feel comfortable doing that. Use facilitative questions like: What would you need to see from us to ensure you get all of your needs met? What would that look like for you? What would you need to see from us to feel comfortable recommending us to a friend? give your current clients 50% off on X if they send a referral. This will not only get you a new client but will ensure that you keep your current client base. Its easier to keep current clients then it is to get new ones. set up a website. Have a page for each of your services, and have links to your business partners/colleagues (see #2). Have your newsletters accessible, and have links to other authorities who are affiliated with your work. Make it a site that your clients or prospects can come to meet you, and determine that youre a professional. By the way, make your site stand for who you are: make your personality shine through. For example, I have 2 main sites: one is to introduce my Buying Facilitation Method, and its mainstream looking to make a large number of people comfortable with a revolutionary idea. My keynote site is creative, flowing, powerful, and fun: this introduces my character as a speaker very different from an information based site as my other one is. These ideas should get you started. Just remember to stay open and flexible to whatever will be necessary to have people decide that you will be part of the solution they need to embrace to solve their problem. Good luck. Sharon Drew Morgen is a thought leader, and the author of New York Times Bestseller Selling with Integrity, Sales on the Line, and Buying Facilitation: the new way to sell as well as over 400 articles. She is the pioneer behind the visionary sales paradigm the Morgen Buying Facilitation Method. As the architect of a wholly original sales model, Sharon Drew has provoked, inspired, and motivated thousands of sales professionals world-wide.
