By Bernadette Sukley Trust scientists to stick their noses into our private business and private parts. Theyve even torn apart love and boiled it down to its basic chemical components (can you say pheromones?). Heres the truth behind the lore of spring love. Due to the northern hemisphere winter there's a pattern of light and dark that our bodies cannot ignore. Melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleepiness and hibernation is naturally elevated during winter. Come spring, the hormone's levels fall with exposure to longer hours of daylight. The levels of the hormone, serotonin, responsible for feeling good rise. Since melatonin suppresses libido, once it falls theres a renewed interest in sex. Thus an aura of happiness is in the air. Naturally all the male animals check out the female animals coming out of hibernation. Spring is also the time that marks the beginning of a new life cycle; trees and plants blossom. Baby animals; fawns, lambs and the ever so popular rabbits make their appearance. This abundance of life increases interest in fertility. The Oh-my-gosh-summer-is-almost-here! syndrome. An increase in sunlight also means most women realize that they will be revealing portions of their bodies that were kept under cover for about 3 months. Theyve naturally added a few pounds over winter. Why? Because they were lazy and ate too much? Hardly. Again, hormones are to blame. Metabolism slows down caloric burn, so even the most careful of eaters will note theres some extra padding. With the warmer weather these ladies will frantically take to the outdoors to lose weight. An opportunity to test the waters of love also occurs as a preliminary warm up to summer love. Lastly, weather is a huge factor for spring and love. Spring marks the beginning of more sunlight and warmer temperatures. Since the body performs best at temperatures above 55F, all functions go into ready mode. That includes gathering, hunting, catching and er, sex. When temperatures rise in the summer the human body goes into a hot hibernation and bodily functions slow down. Youll note that for most resorts and vacation spots Spring is the beginning of their busy season. More time to play means, more time to date.
